This week’s Newday company spotlight is Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO). Cisco Systems is an American technology conglomerate headquartered in San Jose, California– the heart of Silicon Valley. The company develops, manufactures, and sells networking hardware, telecommunications equipment and other high-technology products and services. For more than 30 years, Cisco has been pioneering the technology that connects everything around. Through their technology and the ingenuity of their employees, Cisco is accelerating global problem solving and the advancement of social and environmental benefits. The company has divided its role in solving the world’s problems through three main focus areas and priorities: People, Society, and Planet.


The company prioritizes attracting, keeping, and sharing great talent and invigorating inclusion, collaboration and employee community impact. To accomplish this, It has set a 2020 goal to achieve 80% employee engagement, measured by volunteer service and donations to charitable causes. For the fiscal year 2018, the company reported that 46% of their employees donated or volunteered in charitable events. It also reported that 11,000+ institutions across the world were using their Cisco Networking Academy IT curriculum free of charge.


Cisco focuses on strategic social investments, building digital skills and entrepreneurship, human rights, and prioritizes responsible sourcing and manufacturing. Cisco reported that Cisco and the Cisco Foundation contributed $383 million in cash, audited 84% of its smelters and refiners in their supply chain, and had 60 supplier facilities audited through a third-party auditor. Cisco supports free expression and open communication on the Internet. It played a leading role in helping to make Internet technology ubiquitous, allowing billions of people across the world have access to information that was previously unavailable. To track its supply chain, Cisco created the Supply Day Diversity Award, which recognizes suppliers who share and reflect Cisco’s commitment to inclusion and diversity while delivering high customer satisfaction.



The company is aware of their energy and greenhouse emissions and the material use and waste realized from their activities. Cisco’s Planet initiative is referenced as advancing environmentally sustainable growth in a digital world. They approach the environmental sustainability problem by tackling areas where they have the greatest potential for impact––that is, their ability to reduce their energy use and using resources more efficiently. As of 2018, 100% of their North American facilities are run by electricity generated from renewable energy sources. In Bangalore, India, 40% of their electricity needs are provided by two off-site solar contracts. Every April, the company hosts a month-long employee volunteerism and awareness campaign. They plan their activities, events, and volunteer opportunities to encourage employees to take action in environmentally responsible behavior at work and at home.
